BSI Draws On Youth for H&S Message

PRESS RELEASE

2 October 2003

As part of BSI's commitment to health and safety (H&S), the Chiswick based company is planning to mark European Safety & Health Week (13th to 17th October) with a poster competition for the Chiswick Community School. BSI Chairman, Sir David John, will be presenting the winners with their prizes at BSI's global headquarters building on 8th October.

The pupils from this specialist technology school have been tasked to design a poster that will raise children's awareness of the H&S risks associated with hazardous substances at home, travelling to school, or in school.

The competition is open to all Year Seven pupils and all Art & Design students in Years 10 and 11 at Chiswick Community School.

Jonathan Bach, head teacher of Chiswick Community School says, "I believe the competition will raise the profile of health and safety for our students, and we're delighted to be working with BSI to this end."

Tony Connell, the health, safety and environment (HSE) director for BSI, says:

"Hazardous substances include, for example, things like powders, dusts, gases, paints, fuels, solvents and cleaning fluids - all of which may be

found at home and at school."
Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed posters in each age group with the 1st prize winning a gift voucher worth £30, 2nd prize a £20 voucher and 3rd prize a £15 voucher.

Commenting on BSI's own commitment towards improving its H&S, Tony Connell, adds: "The importance of H&S in protecting our workforce and our families, whether in business or in the community, cannot be understated. BSI is playing an active role in reinforcing that message."

BSI is also running a programme for its staff during European Safety and Health Week, which will be of benefit to them and their families. The programme includes: the Fire Brigade on 'Fire Safety in the Home, the Police on 'Personal Security', the St. John's Ambulance on 'Resuscitation' and the Stroke Association who will be discussing 'Prevention', plus on-hand advice and information on healthy eating, exercise and lifestyle.
